Field Notes on Machine Listening and the Global Corporation
with James Parker

The first workshop on Computational Auditory Scene Analysis was held in 1996
and attended by around thirty computer scientists and acousticians. This year, the workshop is being held at a massive conference centre in Tokyo. Attendance will be closer to a thousand, with sponsorship from some of the world’s biggest technology companies, including Samsung, Hitachi, and Mitsubishi. In this seminar, I will present some field notes from the workshop, which I will have attended the week before, and situate the experience in relation to my recent work on machine listening’s history and ongoing planetisation.
