The Transnational Association of Legal Scholars (TALS)
Founded in 2023, the Transnational Association of Legal Scholars (TALS) is a group of scholars working in a diverse set of traditions and drawing upon a range of different methodologies in their research and teaching of law – from critical legal theory and law and the humanities to the history, philosophy and theory of (international) law. Besides a shared intellectual and political interest in understanding the contemporary manifestations of law in the world, members of TALS have a particular interest in cultivating excellent practices of research supervision. For TALS members, this imports an attention to the question of how particular scholarly tasks are performed. each year, TALS convenes the virtual Academy in Advanced Legal Research and Method (TALS Academy). The idea behind the Academy is for members of TALS to come together online with a select group of advanced graduate students and early career scholars working broadly on legal questions and to share their disciplinary knowledge, and experience in a range of different settings – structured writing groups, ‘how to’ workshops (where a senior Member of TALS shares a particular research question they are working on, for example), online lectures and seminars, and dedicated ‘Skillshare’ sessions.
